Barcelona Sculptures
These are the sculptures that I made in Barcelona. My works are self portraits. They emphasise my body identity which I see as a shelter for my spirit. At the same time they touch on emotional issues—-using parts of my body to underlie the importance of feelings and affective life which make up my individuality. Making sculptures of bodies usually imply permanence; making what is mortal into something that is immutable and unchanging. The irony of it is that I talk of change in my works, but what you see are figures trapped or frozen in time, entombed in silence. But I can see that my sculptures are not as immobile as they seem, that they are affected by space and time as well. They participate in the effects of time rather than attempting to defy them. They stem out of memories, events that have occurred or are happening now in my life.
