The exhibition "Abeilles femelles noires" or Black Female Bees- Scenes from 19th Century Paris showcases illustrations done by Indian artist Samij Datta based on erotic/love poems of French Symbolist era belonging to Charles Baudelaire, Stephane Mallarme, Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud and Tristan Corbière. They were popularly known as the poètes maudits or "accursed poets."
The artworks in charcoal and ink throw a sense of comic sweetness over the fluidity of strokes and lines on paper like a free verse movement. As a deviation from naturalist imitations and realism , the illustrations are almost lyrical with strains of romantic desire and pleasure of a playful nightlife in Paris full of dance, music, cabarets and brothels.
