In 2003 I moved to Barcelona to study art full time. I had spent most of my professional life working at the periphery of the art world—cultural events organization, museum work, and graphic design—and that year I thought it was the time to take the plunge, drop everything and make art.
Now I make sculptures; it is the best way to express what I have to say. I make moulds of parts of my body to see pieces of myself—a way of purifying and detaching myself, paving the road to self awareness. I capture fragments of my Self to help me have a clearer definition of my identity.
Moving to a different country has also influenced my work. Fragmentation of body parts are common in works of artists living abroad, as if moving out of their homes has literally disjointed them. I could see that clearly in my works. In my attempt to reconstruct and fabricate a new identity I tried to build on pieces of my body. Now that I am back in the Philippines, I find myself still doing the same thing. I can see that it is a never-ending process—I discover and reveal myself in bits and pieces; secret parts, a growth that remains to be seen.
